Tips and Tricks: LulzBot TAZ MOARstruder Tool Head

The LulzBot MOARstruder Tool Head combines high-speed 3D printing with super-strong 3D printed parts. Get the most out of your MOARstruder Tool Head by following these LulzBot 3D printer tricks and tips.

Thick Layers, Faster 3D Prints

Need to test your prototype for fit and function? A large layer height means fewer total layers. Every additional layer requires more movements and adds to the final print time. With the large nozzle diameter and the extra-long heater block, the MOARstruder Tool Head can consume over 100 grams of filament an hour! That's roughly one kilogram in 10 hours, and over five pounds of filament in 24 hours!

Finer, Stronger, and Faster

The large nozzle diameter of 1.2 mm is perfect for layer heights of 0.5 mm (0.02 in) to 1.2 mm (0.05 in). Finer layers look great but still save time versus a standard tool head, while coarser layers are great when you need a strong part fast and cosmetics aren't as important.

The LulzBot MOARstruder Tool Head is capable of producing thicker extrusion widths at lower layer heights, leading to stronger walls and infill structures 3D printed in one pass where the standard tool head would require two or three passes. Expert users can tweak the extrusion width from 1 mm (0.04 in) - 2.5 mm (0.1 in). Extrusion widths of up to 3 mm (0.12 in) are possible, but will result in a rougher part finish.

Use the Right Material

nGen exhibits a low shrink rate and offers excellent layer adhesion. Choose nGen when your 3D printed object needs to be strong, stiff, and offer higher heat resistance than PLA. This strength and hardness may lead to brittleness in thin, spindly parts. Mitigate this by using one or more thick perimeters made possible by the LulzBot MOARstruder Tool Head.

PolyLite PLA excels at printing large scale objects with little-to-no warp, making it perfect for applications featuring flat surfaces and hard angles. PolyLite PLA is also available in 3 kg (6.6 lb) reels which are large enough to keep up with the impressive MOARstruder Tool Head extrusion rate of 100 grams per hour.

t-glase prints with a startling degree of translucence. This characteristic is maximized with big layer heights. The thicker the extrusion the more light will shine through! t-glase is polyester-based, strong, and is even stronger when 3D printed with the large LulzBot MOARstruder layer heights. Expert users can change the nozzle diameter and layer height in Cura LulzBot Edition to 1.5 mm-- forcing over-extrusion for big, gorgeous layers.

INOVA-1800 is a quality co-polyester filament made from Eastman Amphora™ 1800 3D polymer. This material is dimensionally stable and combines a glossy finish with incredible strength. INOVA-1800 is perfect for large objects that need to interlock, be functional, or resist physical stress.
